A recent study says that 1 in 4 teenage girls have a sexually-transmitted disease.
Yes, you read that right. About half of the girls aged 14-19 surveyed admitted to having had sex. In that group, 40% had an STD. In a survey that tested for only four diseases, that’s an alarming statistic.
Many of the girls who have an STD didn’t believe that they’d had sex because their sexual activities didn’t include intercourse…yet their activities were dangerous enough to give them a disease.
In a world where AIDS really is an epidemic…where abortion is an epidemic…where sexually-transmitted diseases also appear to be epidemic…why do so few believe that teaching abstinence is a good idea? Some would say “They’re teens. They’re going to have sex, so let’s not pretend that they won’t”.
When people say that, my bologna detector starts making loud noises. These people couldn’t honestly suggest that the rates of sexual activity in America are the same now as they were 50 years ago…so something changed. Maybe what’s changed is the notion that self-control is a virtue.
