In my experience, most Christians would agree that they’re not really sure how to interpret the Bible. This is a crucial issue for the Kingdom of God. If followers of Jesus can’t understand the Bible, who can? Biblical literacy begins with simply reading the text, and biblical understanding comes from reading it properly.
Every disagreement about doctrine begins with differences in interpreting the text. Every sincere question I get about how God wants us to live comes from that person being unfamiliar with what the Bible, and especially the New Testament, says. Whether it’s a disagreement about baptism, or the sabbath, or tithing, or whether women should cut their hair, it all comes down to one simple question: how should we interpret the Bible?
Take the time to learn. It’s not hard. Then get busy!
