This is a very important question. Please pay close attention. There’s a lot of nonsense out there about the Holy Spirit. We who claim to follow Jesus must be clear about this question, and avoid being influenced by people who spread unbiblical ideas about the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is a person
The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force, or some kind of energy field, or simply an expression of Jesus’ character. While much of what we read in the Bible that refers to ‘the Spirit’ is kind of general, we know without question that the Holy Spirit is a person. First, Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as “He.” That, by itself, should be enough:
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you. (John 16:13-15)
